Preview; Bruins bring season-long 4-game losing streak to Columbus

March 15, 2011

After reeling off a seven-game winning streak the Bruins have lost four straight, most concerning is that three of those losses came against teams nipping at their heels. The Bruins most recently dropped two games in which they led by two goals, something they have rarely done this year. The Bruins have been off since their 4-2 loss against the Isles on Friday.

The Blue Jackets have lost seven of their last eight games, going 1-4-3 in that time, playing themselves out of the playoffs in doing so. Rick Nash, the franchise, has 29 goals and 60 points this season but hasn’t had the support behind him to get the Blue Jackets into the playoff hunt. The Blue Jackets are in the bottom 10 in goals and goals against so it’s not really a surprise that the Blue Jackets are struggling.

The Bruins on the other hand are sixth in the league in goals and second in goals against. The Bruins offensive stats are misleading though. The Bruins have scored just 11 goals in the last six games and have given up 16 goals in that time, 15 in the last four games. The Bruins defense has been thinned out by the injury bug but it appears that they are getting healthier. Steven Kampfer will be back in the lineup for the first time since getting a concussion on March 3rd. Andrew Ference close to returning but won’t be back tonight.

KPD speculates that Michael Ryder will ride the pine tonight and Tyler Seguin will be back in the lineup. Ryder has one goal in his last 14 games. Claude Julien usually doesn’t bench non-rookies so this is nice to see. Seguin should do well against a team like Columbus who doesn’t play overly-physical defense and let’s up a lot of goals. We’ll also see how Brad Marchand responds to being benched in the third period last game, his first adversity of his young career.
